The Thermal Assessment of aluminium fenestration has become increasingly important to comply with the energy efficiency requirements of Building Regulations. Guidance on ways of meeting these requirements is published in Approved Document L 2006 (ADL: 2006) - Conservation of Fuel and Power which is published in four parts:

L1A..........Work in new dwellings
L2A..........New buildings other than dwellings
L1B..........Work in existing dwellings
L2B..........Work in existing buildings that are not dwellings

The purpose of this document Setting the Standard (StS) No 7 is to define the thermal criteria relating to aluminium fenestration products ie windows, doors and curtain walling, required for them to meet minimum performances and it examines the methods of compliance with, but should not overrule, Approved Document L (ADL) for product design U-values, example calculations, etc. It is also intended to set out good practice and to give guidance on any obscure points that the Regulation may not have been able to address.

Introduction

This publication relates to the 2006 revised building regulations for energy saving in England and Wales only that came into force on 6 April 2006.

Northern Ireland has decided to align its equivalent regulation with the England & Wales version and this will be published later in 2006.

Similar regulations for Scotland are presently being reviewed by the Scottish Building Standards Agency and will be republished in 2007.

It is likely that the Republic of Ireland will review its energy saving regulations in the near future.

All such regulations must now conform to the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive that took effect on 4 January 2006.

Scope

This guide considers the basic requirements for compliance with the requirements for windows and doors using the guidance in the ADLs. It also covers the methods of calculating overall U-values and obtaining Domestic Window Energy Ratings (DWER’s).

Whilst this document makes reference to other fenestration products it may be necessary for the user to refer to other sources of information.

For example, curtain walling is specifically dealt with in a second tier document prepared jointly by the CAB & CWCT entitled “The thermal assessment of window assemblies, curtain walling and non-traditional walls” CWCT, 2006 (ISBN 1 874003 38 6), and gives guidance on the thermal performance of curtain walling and BR443:2006 paragraphs 11 & 12 deal with windows, rooflights and doors.
