| Foreword From a corporate headquarters to domestic premises the entrance gives the first and often a lasting impression of the building and its occupants. Not only must it look good and resist the elements but it must also be safe to use, provide an emergency exit and an appropriate level of security for the owner and the occupants. Thus specification and choice of materials should not be compromised. Introduction This guide offers design, good practice and specification advice intended to provide the building owner, specifier, fabricator etc with the main criteria for the correct selection of aluminium entrance doors and screens. It covers Building Regulations and relevant BS and EN standards including fire risk requirements. The provisions of the Disability Discrimination Act, BS 8300 Guide and Approved Document M of the Building Regulations must not be ignored. In specification terms the differences between commercial and domestic doors are principally volume of traffic and mechanical strength; these are defined in BS DD 171 and repeated in this guide. Specifications should include security, weather resistance and where relevant fire resistance classes taking into account the number, type and configuration of the doors and the building type and usage. |
