Foreword

This edition of 'Setting the Standard No 1’ publication replaces the first edition produced in 1999. Basic curtain wall products, with drainage at transom level or an inappropriate drainage network should not be confused with Patent Glazing and should NOT be used in roof applications.

Introduction

Traditional Patent Glazing has been produced, in its basic two-edge support, ventilated or unsealed form, successfully for a century or more. The proven weather tightness of installations and the practical experience of the specialised contractors provide the basis of a reliable glazing product. The development of the British Standard specification 'BS 5516: Code of practice for the design and installations of sloping and vertical patent glazing’, represents one of the closest working relationships between fenestration contractors and the glass industry.

BS 5516:1991 was the only British Standard to incorporate recommendations on the design and use of glass and plastics glazing sheet materials in non-vertical applications. This shortfall has recently been addressed by BSI in the revision of BS 5516 into two parts:

BS 5516-1 Patent glazing and sloping glazing for buildings --
Code of practice for design and installation of sloping and vertical patent glazing
BS 5516-2 Patent glazing and sloping glazing for buildings --
Code of practice for sloping glazing.

Part 1 contains all the information relating to Patent Glazing systems. Part 2 covers the non-vertical use of glass and plastics glazing sheet materials for all applications except pedestrian access.

A further part of BS 5516-3: Special applications, will deal with the use of glass in floors and the types of glass appropriate for maintenance access and non-fragile roofs.

Other useful information on Patent Glazing, to assist specification writing, may be found in the National Building Specification, NBS Section H10.

The virtues of Patent Glazing described here significantly depend on quality of design and installation. The expertise and integrity of the contractor is of paramount importance and increasingly specifiers are calling for work to be carried out by a Patent Glazing contractor who is a member of the CAB .

These members are happy to make their experience available to specifiers and recommend that a competent Patent Glazing contractor be consulted at the design stage. All member companies guarantee that their work will meet the requirements of the relevant British Standard BS 5516.
